Between the two short years of 1942-1944, an amazing 25,000 women applied to fly planes for the US Army Airforce. Only 1 of 25 applicants made it through to the intensive training program. The 1,074 graduates became Women Airforce Service Pilots, the first women to fly US military planes, serving as civilian pilots in an experimental Army Air Force program.
Washington State was home to more than twenty of those determined young women.
